The recruitment and executive search market took an expected big hit during 2009.The overall market being down caused client companies to change their hiring methods and requirements and job seeking candidates to alter their job search expectations, which effected the business and profitability of the broad spectrum of international and local recruitment and executive search companies operating on the Russian market. Staffwell sailed through those tough times by having long-term loyal clients, new clients with progressive growth plans, and the most highly skilled and hard working professional recruitment/executive search team on the Russian market.

I was recently invited to attend one of John Maxwell’s lectures on Leadership, which was being hosted in the auditorium of a large church in Asheville, North Carolina. I had debated for a few days on whether or not to go. The con was that I am not a big fan of lectures as they always fall short of my expectations, with more time spent on the speaker advertising his/her latest books and related materials for you to buy, then on actually teaching you something new and useful. The pro was that I was curious whether Maxwell, who had written and sold so many books on leadership, might actually have something useful for me to learn.

Nobody will ever win the battle of the sexes. There’s too much fraternizing with the enemy.

The lack of senior women executives in business is well known, with women accounting for fewer than 7.5% of all FTSE 100 directorships. The arguments for this are well rehearsed, and include (according to the attitude and sex of the protagonist) discrimination, mental ability, and personal choice. While any woman juggling school-age children, elderly parents, and housework might feel entitled to deliver a sharp kick to anyone querying women’s ability to manage, a recent study, Do Women Shy Away From Competition? Do Men Compete Too Much? suggests that the reason there are so few senior female executives in business may stem from a core (and unalterable) aspect of female psychology: an aversion to competition and competitive environments.
Clearly indifferent to the possibility of any of the fairer sex deciding to disprove this theory in person and with some force, they go on to claim that this characteristic cannot be changed, and can only be managed: this, they say, is simply the way girls are.
One wonders how Marjorie Scardino (Chief Executive of Pearson, publisher of the Financial Times) or Meg Whitman (President and CEO of eBay) might react to this suggestion, but this could, actually, be the point: that these women have succeeded not in spite of their inability to think and operate in the way men do, but because of it.
