Good persuasion techniques are essential for everyone trying right now to get new business, engaged in a job search, or just trying to get ahead at work or in life.

There is a great new book out called YES! (2008) by Goldstein, Martin & Cialdini, that explains 50 scientifically proven ways to be persuasive.  The book highlights the six universal principles of social influence, the first being ‘reciprocation’.

Reciprocation deals with the concept and general rule that people want to treat each other fairly.  As an example; a small gift or favor will make you more persuasive.  People will want to pay you back.

You buy someone coffee, they will naturally want to buy you coffee the next time, or they will be more willing to assist you with the favor you might want from them then (sales order, job lead contact, assisting you with a project, etc)

However, people value a favor most highly right after you bestow it, so it is advised to not delay for too long, your request for a reciprocal favor.

Reciprocation is a terrific technique to hone and utilize.  I have no doubt the most successful people out there are likely masters at it.

More highlights coming soon from this helpful book…

It’s so true. Recruiters often use it to get referrals or collect all kinds of information from the candidates they once helped find a great job.

WOW. This is so obvious and simple, and funny enough, I use it, I never thought about it. But this one is esential to biuld relationships. I those cases when I used it, most of those relationships stayed with me for years!
