The Dictionary of Corporate Bullshit defines PR people as the people responsible for everything seen in magazines, on TV, or in the newspaper.  They are often very well put-together people who excel at talking to basically anyone at any time and are very good at lying.  Due to frequent work with talent, they have a high tolerance for egomaniacs, prima donnas, and other assorted temperamental folk.

As you may imagine from earlier posts, I find this very funny and very much enjoy and support humor in the workplace.

Moving on from that, I would like to say that I have real respect for good PR people and feel they would also make super business development executives in most companies; as they have no fear, will work relentlessly to get in front of the right people, are focused on achievement and are extremely attentive.

The ‘very good at lying’ part is also interesting.  Last year one of our competitors announced that they had won an award for best recruitment firm on the market, or something like that.  Their PR person had set it all up.  What was interesting here was that Staffwell, as one of this company’s biggest competitors, was never offered to participate in the competition.  So it was they and a bunch of small inferior recruitment firms in the running.  The winner was predetermined.  They won, so they got the result they paid for.

Our PR person is great and fits in well with Staffwell’s values of being highly professional, straightforward, fair, hard-working, and accurate; and we have always won by playing that way.

PR is great and one of the main parts of marketing where you can actually see clear results.  If you don’t already have someone in PR right now, I strongly recommend considering it, especially during this recession when it is essential to keep your company’s brand(s) out there.  Get in touch with us at Staffwell if you would like to interview some great PR people.

PR guys are quite interesting people to talk with and to place as well :) I am in contact with most of the PR managers I’ve placed throughout these years, some of them started as the only PR persons in the company and they brought a company to a much higher level than it was before. So, you are right in saying - get the right PR mangers to bring your brand, company, and/or product to a higher level. But check the way they deal with people, the way they can cope with different and stressful tasks and the way they can “sell” the brand.

I agree with Sergey S - after seeing Staffwell PR Manager at work, now I know what real PR is! I see a huge number of publications, Staffwell expert opinions in multiple mass media, professional photo shoots going on in our office - that is real talent!

Regarding PR “honesty” acting on the market I would mention a use of a stake on sincerity, when there is more prioritizing on originality and freshness over honesty, sincerity provoking direct and open communication and relationships to slacken of a tension and overpressure, excessive attention to the details. I mean should be an honest when honesty is a good arm against massive lie exists on the market, in PR, marketing and mass media. This is a difficult job being with an audience, work with, to be a mouthpiece of your company.

I have a few friends working in PR and marketing. They all complain that the companies they work for whether it’s a huge multinational corporation or a small business tend to disregard their efforts and cut marketing budgets. I believe that apart from being knowledgeable about how marketing works in ‘an ideal world’, these people have to be able to demonstrate what real value they can bring to the business and, which is probably the hardest, be able to communicate on the same level with the strategic decision-makers in their organizations and sell their ideas to them. PR goes hand in hand with marketing and is indispensable for any company engaged in professional services. From my experience in recruitment I learned that there are few efficient PR professionals out there and I’m glad that STAFFWELL employs one of them.

During my (short and freelance) PR stunt I learned that to become a good PR person you have to be really passionate about the company / person you are promoting. Fake just does not cut it in PR. You also have to know your company / person really well. May be there are some facts you have to gloss over, but “very good at lying” is not PR. I quite agree with Sarajit-ji, that “In the long run would surmise that honesty pays”.

I agree our new PR person is great, very professional and active! Staffwell PR activity has drastically increased. You can read about Staffwell in various articles in different sites, forums and articles. This is good. The recent research of bonus systems together with Kommersant was also an interesting PR activity.

  12. Sarajit Jha says:

Public Relations comprises public and a relationship with ‘it’ presumably. The number of advertorials and stringers in the common domain of press today masquerading as
news’ speaks volumes about the depreciation of values and the incipient foundation of the relationship being based on shifty ground. This is internal damage to both the fourth establishment and the profession of PR over time, as the turkey comes home to roost. In the long run would surmise that honesty pays. Reputations are build with years of conforming to behaviour that everyone comes to expect and accept. Any deviation typically leads to immediate review and rumour mongerers usually do the rest. I guess great PR people, need to be great people first, and then the PR automatically follows.
