Competition

Most new job seekers are starting to find out how really tight the competition is for good jobs today. For every new position, there might be several hundred or more candidates competing, meaning job seekers must take a creative, professional approach to their job search to come out on top. A basic understanding of how the process works can help you beat the odds.

The interest in a good job vacancy is typically very high because recruiters use a host of communication tools to connect with a vast amount of appropriate candidates. These tools include, but are not limited to, the Internet, print media, internal and company databases, networking, and headhunting.

Through these avenues, recruiters reach a wide audience of job seekers, and may receive several hundred or more applications for a single job. Once received, recruiters scan resumes and cover letters quickly and discard or file away all those that do not meet the job’s specific requirements. This might eliminate as many as 80% of the responses.

The fact that so many resumes are quickly eliminated means the job seekers who submitted them did not research the job and create a resume and cover letter that would catch the recruiter’s attention. You must do advance research on the job opening and carefully craft a cover letter to match. If needed, you should fine-tune your resume as well.

The 20% of remaining applicants are scrutinized much more carefully as recruiters closely examine relevant experience and education. Ultimately, less than half will be invited for an interview, and only one to three candidates will make it to the final interview. Only one usually gets an offer.

Your goal is to be that one last person. If you present a well-formatted and well-written resume and a cover letter that details convincingly why you match the candidate requirements you increase your chances of making the cut. If you have a good work history, but apply without cover letters and with poorly written and formatted resumes, you are more likely to be rejected.

The following checklist can help insure you are properly prepared for your new job search:

• Research and decide what type of new job you want (occupations and industries)
• Create your new resume
• Create your cover letter
• Practice interview skills
• Review your wardrobe and appearance

Ask a friend to review your completed checklist with you. Have them proofread your resume and cover letter, review your wardrobe and appearance, and practice and/or roll-play your interview skills and techniques with you.  For a more formal professional approach, Staffwell can also help you with this.

Candidates who are confident, know what they want in a job, and have properly prepared for their job search are more likely to succeed than those who do not put time or effort into preparing. If you are applying to jobs but not getting any response, consider taking a step back, examine the efforts you have made so far, and put more effort into job search preparation before you re-enter the job search competition.
